Product Details

The Bristol F.2B Fighter D8084 was an original WWI aircraft flown by Captain Sydney Dalrymple of No. 139 Squadron during the summer of 1918. It was primarily used in the armed reconnaissance role and became notable for its distinctive "Charlie Chaplin" artwork on the port-side engine cowling.

On 8 August 1918, Dalrymple and his gunner, 2nd Lt. G. Beagle, used D8084 to shoot down two Aviatik D.1 Berg Fighters near Caldonazzo, Italy. Later, on 13 September 1918, Dalrymple downed two Albatros D.IIIs, though in a different Bristol Fighter. He went on to become an ace and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 1 November 1918.

While D8084 itself no longer exists, a restored original Bristol F.2B Fighter, originally built as F4516, has been painted to represent it. F4516 was constructed in 1917 and served with No. 13 Squadron, RFC. It was one of six original fuselage frames discovered in a barn at Weston-on-the-Green in the 1960s.

In 1989, the Royal Air Force Museum sold this airframe to The Fighter Collection at Duxford, where it underwent a meticulous restoration. The project incorporated over 60% of its original wooden components and was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Falcon Mark 3 engine sourced from the Prague Technical Museum.

Completed in 1998, it was finished in the markings of D8084 to honour Dalrymple and his squadron. In 2006, the aircraft was acquired by Peter Jackson and now operates under the registration ZK-BRI from Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, New Zealand.

There are both original and replica Bristol Fighters in New Zealand. Jackson’s aircraft is a restored original, but at least one other replica F.2B is also based in the country.
